Porshe Foxster & Cayman New Facelift

Porsche unveiled the facelifted Porsche Boxster roadster and the facelifted Porsche Cayman coupe at the 2008 Los Angeles International Auto Show. The duo now offers the PDK dual clutch transmission replacing the outgoing Tiptronic S slushbox, and the Boxster S and Cayman S now has direct fuel injection on its 3.4 liter engines.

Other than a folding soft top on the Boxster and a coupe roof on the Cayman, the two cars also have some differences in design such as the extra diffuser inserts on the Boxster and the wind deflector plate on the Cayman. On the front end, each have their own front bumper design. Even the front signal lamps are configured differently. While both use LED signal lamps, the Cayman’s LEDs are arranged in a square like the face of dice while the Boxster gets a horizontal row of 4 LEDs.

The base engine in the Boxster and Cayman is the 2.9 liter boxer engine, producing 255hp in the Boxster and 265hp in the Cayman. This mean other than being a roadster and coupe version of the same car, the coupe is now more powerful than the roadster across the range as even in the S versions, the direct fuel injected 3.4 liter engine in the Cayman makes 320hp, a 10hp advantage over the 3.4 liter unit in the Boxster S which makes 310hp.

The new cars are more fuel efficient than the pre-facelift versions. The 2.9 liter version does 8.9 liters per 100km according to the EU4 standard, which is 11% less than the outgoing Tiptronic S model.

Lewis Hamilton : 2008 F1 World Championship

Felipe Massa took a dominant victory in a thrilling race in front of his home crowd at Interlagos and looked to have snatched the drivers' crown until the final corner. Hamilton's fifth place finish was just enough to clinch the championship. In the race, Alonso finished second and Raikkonen third, confirming the constructors' championship for Ferrari.

With the Brazilian fans getting well into the action for a nail-biting, deciding Grand Prix, there was an early twist just two minutes before the parade lap a heavy, two-minute rain shower forced the start to be postponed by ten minutes, to allow teams to change to intermediate tyres if necessary.

Massa made a perfect start to lead Trulli, Raikkonen and Hamilton into the first corner while behind him Kovalainen fell away and lost position to Vettel and Alonso. The safety car was deployed after Piquet and Coulthard was clipped by a Williams in the first corner and also collected Piquet, ending both hopes.

The safety car was in on lap four and Massa led the field, inching out a two-second lead by lap nine. Vettel and Alonso were the first front runners to switch to dry tyres that lap, followed in by Massa on lap 10. Trulli, Raikkonen and Hamilton pitted the following lap and while Ferrari got Raikkonen ahead of the Toyota, they all lost out and rejoined behind Massa, Vettel, Alonso and Fisichella.

Raikkonen soon passed Fisichella for fourth while Hamilton got ahead of a struggling Trulli to take sixth on lap 13.

Massa kept his cool out front, keeping Vettel and Alonso at bay while team mate Raikkonen did his job of backing off with Hamilton finding no way past Fisichella until a brave move down the inside of turn one on lap 18.

Vettel held onto Massa easily until lap 27 when it became clear he was very light on fuel and needed to pit. He rejoined in sixth, while Hamilton moved up to fourth as a result.

Massa built a lead of 7.1s over Alonso before pitting on lap 38. The Spaniard stayed out two more laps before pitting on lap 40, along with Lewis Hamilton. As the second round of stops were complete on lap 43, Massa led Vettel, Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton.

Vettel held onto second until lap 51 when he made his third stop, rejoining in fifth, behind Hamilton, but easily closing in on the McLaren's rear wing.

Massa continued to look flawless out front even when on lap 63 a few more spots of rain began to fall in the pit lane. Hamilton meanwhile was hanging on in fourth, fending off Sebastian Vettel.

The rain intensified with five laps to go and forced the front runners to pit for intermediate tyres. Timo Glock chose not to in the Toyota and climbed to fourth, pushing Hamilton to fifth with Vettel right on his tail.

In the closing laps, Hamilton ran wide and Vettel passed him for fifth and it all looked lost for Hamilton with two laps remaining. He had no reply for the Toro Rosso and looked set to miss out for the second straight year when lady luck paid out in the final corner as Hamilton got past Timo Glock's struggling Toyota, still on dry tyres in wet conditions and came home by the skin of his teeth to win the drivers' championship.

Massa took the win from Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton, Glock, Kovalainen and Trulli. Ferrari confirms its victory in the constructors' championship

Audi displayed this turbodiesel-powered Audi R8 at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show earlier this month. Peek through the rear hatch where the engine bay is and you will see the huge 6.0 liter V12 TDI turbodiesel engine based on the 5.5 liter V12 TDI engine used in Audi’s 24 Hours of Lemans 2006 and 2007 winner, the Audi R10 race car. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

This road-going, Euro VI-compliant version of the engine is built at Audi’s Gyor plant in Hungary, and puts out 500 horsepower and 1,000Nm of torque from as low as 1,750rpm, just over idle speed! This massive amount of power and torque sends the Audi R8 V12 TDI to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds. Putting all that torque to the wheels is Audi’s famous quattro system, sending power to all four wheels in a 40:60 front to rear ratio. The engine bay is illuminated at night with LEDs and can be seen through the rear glass hatch.

The V12 TDI’s crank case is made of gray cast iron with vermicular graphite, a material that Audi calls GJV-450. Audi is already using it in its V6 TDI and V8 TDI engines. This material is 40% more rigid and 100% more fatigue-resistant than conventional gray cast iron. This allowed Audi to make the engine block thinner, cutting weight by 15%.

The mind-boggling grand total of 1000Nm of torque between 1,750rpm and 3,000rpm are thanks to two variable turbine turbochargers located outside of the V bank that blow up to 2.6 bar of boost pressure into the two banks of cylinders. These turbos have two large intercoolers. Exhaust exists from each turbo into its own exhaust system - this means twin exhaust and even twin particular filters.

Ferrari unveiled the new version of the FXX during this past weekend’s Ferrari World Finals at its Mugello race track in Italy. The FXX is not homologated for road use and there are no plans to compete with it either. In fact, the FXX prototype is designed exclusively for track driving as part of a specific R&D programme agreed with a selected group of just over 20 clients involving 14 group test sessions and 14 private ones in the last two years. Thanks to readings taken over the 16,500 kilometres of tests carried out in 2006 and the 18,500 kilometres covered in 2007, the modifications made to the car have focused on honing its aerodynamics, running gear and electronics. Seven-times Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher also joined the ranks of the client test drivers and gave the programme the benefit of his vast experience on several occasions.

The FXX evolution package includes participation in a series of track events that Ferrari is organising at international circuits for 2008/2009. Six events are planned for each year (two in North America, two in Europe and two in Asia). In addition to these, the FXXs will also be participating, as per tradition, in the prestigious end-of-season Ferrari World Finals.

As happened in 2006/2007, the cars will be backed up at each event by a 15-member official team made up of engineers, electronics experts and mechanics capable of providing complete assistance to clients. Needless to say, the latter will still be able to organise their own private individual track sessions in their car as well.

Shots of the Nissan GT-R are now being circulated around the net thanks to AutoWeek who decided to break the embargo following a previous leak of the production car’s exterior on Motortrend magazine’s December cover.

The Motortrend cover quotes some specs: 0 to 100km/h is achieved in 3.5 seconds, and a quarter mile drag in 11.7 seconds, with top speed maxing out at 310km/h. The car will cost under US$80,000. UPDATE: Edmunds Inside Line has more specs of the car - the twin turbocharged 3.8 liter V6 engine will be putting out 473 horsepower and 588Nm of torque, though there is no indication of what engine speeds these figures achieved. Still, looking at the tachometer you can tell this engine isn’t a screamer. This engine will be mated to a GR6 dual-clutch six-speed transmission with leather-wrapped aluminum paddle shifters - no manual is planned at the moment.

The interior kind of reminds me of an Audi but definitely looks the business, acres and acres of premium-looking black and aluminium trim. The bootspace looks rather decent and the gas shocks do not intrude into the space.

Fiat Grande Punto Abarth

Fiat’s Abarth in-house tuning division will be making a comeback with the new Fiat Grande Punto Abarth. Set to bring Fiat back into the hot hatch game, the Grande Punto Abarth will feature a 1.4 liter Turbocharged engine making 150 horsepower at 5,500rpm on regular grade petrol, or 155 horsepower on RON98. With this engine, you get 6-speeds of manual fun to shift through. Peak torque is at 3,000rpm, with 230Nm, but only if you activate the sports mode which up the boost. Otherwise it is 206Nm at 2,000rpm. A more powerful version is also set to be revealed, with a total of 180 horses under the hood from the same engine.

The suspension system uses a McPherson layout at the front, and a torsion axle at the rear, similiar in setup to the Honda Civic 5-door Type R, something that has attracted criticism but somehow manages to perform well on the track. Brakes have Brembo twin pot calipers up front on 305mm ventilated discs, while the rear caliper is a single piston setup gripping 264mm discs.

An Abarth-tuned Fiat 500 is also in the works, which could prove to be quite fun.

Nissan Skyline GTR 2009

Nissan engineers are working hard on putting the finishing touches to the new Nissan Skyline GT-R, which will debut at the next Tokyo auto show (october 24th). While we wait for official photos, the japanese magazines Response.jp and Holiday Auto have some very interesting information regarding the price and the engine of this new super-car from Nissan.

According to Holiday Auto, the engine will be called VR38, part of a new family of extremely light engines, built with extensive use of aluminium, titanium and magnesium. The VR family will be very different from the VQ family of V6 engines, used in a good portion of Nissan/Infiniti coupes and sedans.

The VR38 engine will be a V6 with a 3.8-liters capacity, with two variable geometry turbines with a pressure of 1.47 bar. Valvelift and timing will be variable, thanks to the new Nissan system called VVEL.

Power output will be 480 ps at 6,800 rpm, but the VR38 engine will have more than 90% of top power still available between 6,800 and 7,500 rpm (redline at 7,600 rpm). Torque will be impressively linear: 580 Nm constant between 1,700 and 5,600 rpm.

The GT-R will be based on a Premium Midship platform, which has a weight distribution of 50/50 on the front and rear axles. The 4WD system and the weight distribution is a good premise for the road handling characteristics of the GT-R.

This concept called the Subaru WRC Concept will be making it’s public debut at the 2007 Frankfurt International Motor Show next month. It gives us a preview of what the Subaru Impreza STi will look like when it is released in 2008.

The Subaru WRC Concept has twin exhaust pipes on the rear - one on each side, however the production version is said to get quad tail pipes, with the twin pipe setup for rally-going versions of the car only. It will have a wider track than the standard Impreza and Impreza S-GT.

Wheel: What is your national origin or ethnicity?

Rebecca: I'm Vietnamese and French.

Wheel Babes: As a teenager what were some of your interests? Were you into academics, athletics-sports, the band, choir, theatre-drama, the arts, sciences, cheerleading, the boys, some of the above, or all of the above?

Rebecca: All of the above! I was pretty active in high school. I played soccer, ran track, was a cheerleader, ASB member, did theatre-drama and was also Senior Class President.

Wheel Babes: What personality trait or traits would your friends say best described you as a young girl: Mama's girl, daddy's girl, tomboy, bookworm, nerd, geek, flirt, tease, class clown, tattletale, brat, troublemaker, little miss goody two shoes, or little devil?

Rebecca: I'd say a hybrid between "brat" and "troublemaker." I was notorious for pouting and scheming until I got my way when I was younger. An incident that is still talked about among friends and family members was when I was 7 and decided to pierce my own ears after my mother repeatedly told me I couldn't get them pierced. Long story short, I infected both my ears and got everyone involved in a ton of trouble.

Wheel Babes: What made you interested in modeling and/or acting? How old were you when you first got started? Who or what was a key influence to your getting started?

Rebecca: I had a friend that was an actress on the TV show Colby's Clubhouse when I was younger. I thought it was so neat to see her on TV and I wanted to do the same thing she did. My first paid gig was a kid's musical production when I was 14, but I didn't pick up acting/modeling again until college when I was approached by an agent at a pageant that wanted to represent me for print/commercial. She got me everything from hair ads to voiceovers, and even an SCE commercial. She also got me involved in several indie projects and I got tremendous feedback from producers and writers who encouraged me to pursue my "hobby" fulltime. I recently just got representation for theatre so I'm really excited about things to come!

New Ferrari Dino In The Works?

Ferrari Deputy Managing Director Amedo Felisa and CEO Luca Cordero di Montezemolo have both denied plans for a new low-end model, but rumors continue to circulate from within the Italian automaker the a new car is most definitely in the works.

The car will reportedly arrive in 2009, and share a platform with the upcoming replacement to the Maserati GT coupe. Like the forthcoming Alfa Romeo 8C, the new Dino will make use of carbon fiber and aluminum to keep weight low. Power will come from a 400 horsepower V8, and annual volume is expected around 4,000 units.

Locus, new Quebec-based company, is aiming to fly the flag for Canadian carmaking with a self-developed new supercar called the Plethore. This new supercar concept revives the three-seat interior layout seen in the McLaren F1, with the driver taking a central position and two passengers sitting a little further behind. It’s meant to give everyone an optimum view out, as well as allowing for space for three adults up to six foot six in height - the ideal car for lanky Canadian ice hockey players.

The Plethore has been developed by a composite materials specialist, Luc Chartrand, and its body is all carbon fibre. It will be offered with a choice of two power outputs: an entry-level 750bhp, and a scary-sounding 1,300bhp. No further details have yet been released on the car’s powertrain but the brave can sign up now: prices start from CAN$330,000, or £155,300 at today’s favourable exchange rates.

Canada may not be known for its home-grown products but it’s actually one of the world’s most prolific car-building nations. More cars are now built in the province of Ontario than in the US state of Michigan, traditionally the heartland of American car manufacture.

The Lamborghini Gallardo V8 was caught testing at the Nürburgring race track. The V8 Gallardo will use the same exhaust note as the Audi R8 and the exhaust pipes are smaller than on the V10 Gallardo.

Lamborghini will borrow the current V8 engine from the R8 for a more affordable Gallardo. The new supercar will sit bellow the current V10 Gallardo, but above the current Audi R8. The V8 will bust around 430 hp in the new Gallardo, but with the low weight of the supercar, the performance will be better compared to the R8: 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 195 mph.

The Gumpert Apollo (pronounced gum-pair-h) is the first supercar produced by Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH in Germany. The project is the creation of Roland Gumpert, a former Audi employee who oversaw many a rallying success working as competitions chief in their Quattro division. Gumpert’s partner is Roland Mayer, the boss of German tuning house MTM.

The Apollo is a 1100kg, street-legal race car with up to 650hp and 627 lb/ft of torque, designed to take on the Porsche 911 GT3, it is a mid engined, rear wheel drive two seater constructed on a tubular Chromoly frame, with fiberglass or carbon fiber body panels. An Audi 4.2L V8 engine is joined to a six-speed sequential gearbox with Formula 1 influences. Estimated top speed is 360 km/h (224mph) with 0-100km/h (0–62 mph) reached in 3.0 seconds, making it the 9th best accelerating production car in the world, behind the Ariel Atom. Prices start at 198,000 EUR / £190,000 GBP / $380,000 USD, and Gumpert hopes to produce 150 Apollo’s between 2005 and 2008.

Gumpert claims the car has as much downforce as any car that would run in the DTM German touring car championship, it produces an astonishing 1500kg of downforce at 330km/h, enough to allow the car to drive on the ceiling without falling off.

The new W204 C-Class now comes in AMG form as the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, a compact monster powered by a normally aspirated high 11.3:1 compression 6.3 liter V8 engine putting out 451 horsepower at 6,800rpm and 600Nm of torque at a high 5,000rpm - but this does not mean the 6.2 liter engine doesn’t have any grunt on the low end! At least 500Nm of twisting force is already available from 2,000rpm onwards.

Straight line performance is naturally good - 4.5 seconds from 0 to 100km/h through a fast-shifting AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission, which enables you to shift gears automatically or through steering wheel shift paddles. The shift modes include a Sport, Comfort and Manual mode. The engine and gearbox combo also features automatic throttle-blipping during downshifts.

The front axle has been redesigned to take all the new power. It has a new three-link front axle design which has a 35mm wider track, supplemented by flared wheel arches. The suspension has been upgraded to an AMG sports suspension. The rear suspension has a 12mm wider track, and drive shafts have been reinforced to take the increased torque.

Steering is via an AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, which might be disappointing to some as the whole perception with speed-sensitive steering is that you lose alot of feel, but AMG promises a direct ratio feel when you are driving spiritedly.

For safety, the car’s 18 inch or 19 inch wheels hide huge 6-piston caliper 360×36mm discs at the front and 330×26mm discs with 4-piston calipers at the rear. The Electronic Stability Control program is also enhanced with a 3-stage ESP program. You can pick from ESP ON, EPS SPORT, and ESP OFF, much like BMW’s DSC, DTC and DSC Off functions.

However, traction control logic is never completely off in AMG’s ESP software, even in ESP OFF mode. Brake pressure is still applied sometimes to create the effect of a mechanical diff-lock.

BMW Signs off Mommy-Mover

After many years of consideration and thought, BMW has finally entered the market controlled by the likes of the Renault Scenic and Chrysler Grand Voyager. They are going to launch a mommy mover known as a Cross Over / Utility vehicle.

The idea has been around for a while and it is a feasible area of the market to exploit so there is no reason why BMW shouldnt. It will be known as the F3 and should reach showrooms by 2010 according to BMW sources. It will have the usual line up of BMW engines like the 2.0L petrol and 3.0L diesel and there is a possibility of the 3.0L Twin Turbo being shoved in. As in true Cross Over / Utility style, the car will feature seven seats and the features from the X3.

Personally I think it is a horrendous design and is further proof that making money is more important than making cars.
